![]() ![]() I loved Enid Blyton, her Wishing Chair stories, Magic Faraway Tree stories, fairy-land and toy-land stories as well as the mysteries.Ī couple of years later, I discovered The Lion, Witch and Wardrobe by C.S. The mystery story was so exciting, I finished it in one session and I was a fast reader from that moment onwards. Reading was a slow process until one birthday, I sat down with my gift, a Famous Five book by Enid Blyton. ![]() Sometimes there was a fat cat on a mat or dog with a ball. I remember the struggle to learn to read – painfully stringing three letter words together – there was Sam and Pam and a ball. ![]() As a dark-haired, tanned little English girl (remember Britain was at one stage occupied by the Romans), I was very different and mercilessly teased. I grew up in the Barossa Valley, an area of South Australia predominantly settled by German immigrants. ![]() ![]() ![]() And who knows, if Obbo started to farm his rewilded land while maintaining its wildness, what new productivity he might find. ![]() The idea could go viral! Clearly, local people craved the shade and bird song on Obbo’s ‘wilded land’ and were finding respite. If Obbo is rewilding his land, others may be looking to do so too. “People now come from villages all around to take photos in what they refer to as the ‘park’.” Charles Onyango-Obbo “What started as a green hobby (grew) wings,” wrote the columnist. But my question when I encountered it was – is wildling or rewilding relevant to Africa? I quickly learned that the answer was ‘Yes’.įirst, I saw a recent article in Uganda’s Monitor by the journalist Charles Obbo, who several years ago started in his words – “a quirky small experiment to ‘rewild’ part of his ancestral land” in Tororo, Uganda. The book is a runaway success in the UK, selling almost 100,000 copies in its first year. Wilding is about the return of nature to a failing British farm and how gradually the land healed, and the farm began to flourish again. ![]() ![]() ![]() Whether you’re new to watercolor or have been practicing for years, these colorful designs are perfect for a relaxing afternoon alone or as an activity for the whole family. Do read it in full, as it backs up its arguments with relevant quotes from both Blake poems and U2 songs, but I'll quote the most important parts here. This was written before the release of U2's Songs of Experience, but it's pretty insightful nonetheless. Kokkoris, probably the closest thing there is to an 'expert on U2', goes into more detail about similarities in theme and ideas between Blake's Songs of Innocence and Experience and the eponymous U2 songs. ![]() I'm not saying I have much of that but what little I have, I wanted to cram into these songs.Īn analysis by Tassoula E. If you're talking about innocence, you've probably already lost it but I do believe at the far end of experience, it's possible to recover it with wisdom. I try not to talk about William Blake too much because it sounds pretentious quoting such a literary giant but it was his great idea I pinched to compare the person we become through experience to the person who set out on the journey. ![]() According to Bono (lead vocalist and primary lyricist of U2), the main thing they took from Blake was the idea of comparing innocence and experience: ![]() ![]() ![]() The Danes need the metal for repairs in Copenhagen, following a devastating war with Sweden. His first task is to remove an old Icelandic bell from its tower. Jón Hreggviðsson has been caught stealing cord to tie his fish catch and is now working for the Danish king’s hangman. In the area where Jón Hreggviðsson lives, petty criminals are often sentenced to the workhouse and have to do work for their Danish masters. Iceland is under complete Danish control, which means that the Icelanders can only trade with the Danes and are subject to often arcane Danish law and justice though, of course, this story is told from the Icelandic and not the Danish perspective. The novel is set in the late seventeenth/early eighteenth century. The hero is Jón Hreggviðsson (though his name is changed both by the Danes and Germans). Like other of his novels, it is picaresque and features a stubborn, determined Icelander. ![]() ![]() This, for me, may well be the best of Laxness’ novels available in English. Tomorrow, I’m turning back to my other strand of writing – standalone contemporary suspense – to begin to deal with my editor’s notes on Book 3. Last week, trying to get one finished, I hated Dandy Gilver, the 1930s, Scotland and the spirit of Christie and Sayers with a passion. They’re preposterous – one is set in a circus, for crying out loud – but I’m serious about them and proud of them. The series is set in Scotland in the 1920s (oh, except it’s actually 1931 now) featuring that stalwart of the British golden age, a gently-born female private detective. It’s been ELO’s Mr Blue Sky for a few books but I knew this one would be Happy from the first minute I heard it. I hit save, then printed it out, dancing around to Pharrell Williams’ Happy. On that diva-ish note! What am I working on? Well, it’s Sunday the 1st of June and on Friday I finished the first draft of the 10th book in my DANDY GILVER series, which is just about the best feeling in a writing life. ![]() This isn’t because of copyright concerns or high-flying contract negotiations, but for reasons I’ll discuss under Q4 below. ![]() ![]() I’m working on some things I can’t talk about yet. When Tim Hallinan asks you to answer four questions on writing, the sensible thing to say is:Ĥ. ![]() ![]() ![]() “I just want to say … I’m really glad you got away from … the door.” She takes a step toward me, her voice lowering. “Carrie,” she softly calls my name, and I stop and turn around. “Okay”-I start for the door-“I’ll see you bright and early tomorrow morning.” “Work the breakfast shift first, and we’ll see if you still feel that way,” she jokes. I can’t tell you how much I appreciate it.” “How would you feel about working the breakfast shift?” “I don’t know how you feel about hiring pregnant women, but I really need a job.” “Actually, there is something I need …” I glance at the sign in the window before looking back to her. “Well, I just wanted to say, if you ever need anything-pie, decaf tea-you know where to find me.” ![]() “And you’ve also probably already figured that this is my place.” ![]() I’m Sadie, which you’ve probably figured.” She gestures to her name badge. “Well, if you need anything …” She pauses, waiting for me to tell her my name. “Thank you.” I slide off the stool, standing. ![]() |
